ASP.NET 2.0 Tips and Tricks presentation

Posted by Clayton James on September 29, 2006

I was recently lucky enough to present a re-run of a Tech.Ed presentation that I enjoyed to a dev team at a local council (Redland Shire). The original session was delivered by the man himself Scott Guthrie. Scott obviously stands out when he is in presentation mode as being on stage and delivering demo’s/discussion’s looks like second nature to him. He would keep the presentation flowing, answer questions as he goes and would always hang around afterwards for further discussion.

One of the main reasons I enjoyed this session so much is that I can use the material straight away in ASP.NET 2.0 applications, which is why there is great beneift for developers learing some of the cool new features that makes life a little easier.

The only change I made to the demo was a section I did on SqlDependency. This is a great feature that allows you to cache the entire page until data changes in an identified SQL table. When a data change is detected the next page request calls the database and refreshes the data. Table-level caching works with SQL Server 2000 and 2005 but there are some differences in the way IIS is notified that data changes have occurred. Very cool!
