Remove problem web parts

Posted by Clayton James on November 5, 2007

Scenario:
You create a web part and deploy it to your site. All is working fine until you make a change to the web part or remove the web part assembly from the bin/GAC and you suddenly find yourself viewing a page that displays an error stack trace. All you want to do is render the page so you can remove the offending web part through the UI as you longer want to use it.

Thankfully there is a nifty little page that you navigate to and remove the obstructing web part so you can render the page again.

Simply append “?contents=1” to the end of the url and refresh. E.g. http://moss/Pages/Default.aspx?contents=1

This will navigate you to the Web Part Page Maintenance pictured below and now you can remove the problem web part.
