Add Quick Launch to Search Site

Posted by Clayton James on November 3, 2008

The Search Center in the OOTB collaboration portal doesn’t display the Quick Launch menu. If you would like to display this menu then all you have to do is modify three page layouts.

Note: To find what page layout a page is using you will need to place the page into edit mode and in the Page Editor toolbar drop down the Page menu item and select Properties (I think it is called Properties). This will then allow you view and change the page layout if needed.

  1. Open SharePoint designer and navigate to the Master Page gallery
  2. Open the SearchMain.aspx page layout and remove the following <asp:Content> controls
    1. PlaceHolderLeftNavBar
    2. PlaceHolderBodyLeftBorder
  3. Open the SearchResults.aspx page layout and remove the following <asp:Content> controls
    1. PlaceHolderLeftNavBar
    2. PlaceHolderBodyLeftBorder
    3. PlaceHolderNavSpacer
  4. Open the PeopleSearchResults.aspx page layout and remove the following <asp:Content> controls
    1. PlaceHolderLeftNavBar
    2. PlaceHolderBodyLeftBorder
    3. PlaceHolderNavSpacer

Now you should be able to navigate to your Search Center and you should see your Quick Launch menu.

Hopefully this also demonstrates the power of how Content page <asp:Content> controls can override master page <asp:PlaceHolderControls>

Hmmm… I am trying to display the quick launch on our search results page. So I removed the controls you mentioned above but still don’t see the quick launch. I attempted to edit the minimal.master page to see if that would change it but still no luck. Is there another way to do this?? Am I missing something??
